Celebrity Book Auction for literacy

One thing that was brought to my attention while I was in WA was The Great Celebrity Book Auction. Well-known people from Australia and beyond have donated books that have influenced their lives, to raise money for literacy programs at Kyilla Primary School, a small Government school of 200 students in North Perth.

The children and families of Kyilla Primary School wrote to more than 150 celebrities asking them to donate a book and write in it why it was important to them. ‘The aim of the project’ says coordinator Cherie Hardingham-Braid, ‘is to show our kids – and the community – that reading is important and that books have the power to transform lives and to take them on new adventures.’

More than 45 celebrities have participated, including Dawn French, Tim Minchin, William McInnes, Shane Warne, Andrew Denton, Kerry Stokes, Andrew Forrest, Pamela Allen, Andy Griffiths and the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce.

The donated books include those by authors Roald Dahl, Rudyard Kipling, Kurt Vonnegut, Spike Milligan and Agatha Christie.

Most books are being auctioned online at a dedicated website. The online auction ends on Sunday, 20 March 2011. A select number of books will be auctioned live at the Kyilla Primary School fete on Saturday, 19 March 2011 at 6pm. These books can be viewed on the school website.

I’m always happy to get behind projects like these, because literacy is so incredibly important. If you’re keen on one of the celebrity books, make a bid!
